Michigan State University's women's tennis team concluded its home tournament on Sunday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. The event, known as the Michigan State Classic and presented by Auto-Owners Insurance, spanned three days of competitive play.
The Spartans showcased their skills against teams from Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Xavier. Representing MSU were freshman Amara Brahmbhatt, juniors Matilde Morais and Issey Purser, along with sophomore Natalie Stasny.
On Sunday morning, Morais and Stasny began with a doubles match against Northwestern's Jessel/Rabjohns duo and secured a 6-3 victory. Brahmbhatt and Purser also played in doubles but faced a narrow defeat to Northwestern's Riester/Shepherd pair with a score of 4-6.
In singles matches that followed, all four Spartan players participated. Morais and Purser took on opponents from Xavier while Brahmbhatt and Stasny went up against competitors from Michigan.
Purser competed against Erica Jessel of Xavier but was unable to secure a win despite scoring points in both sets; she lost 4-6, 5-7. Brahmbhatt showed resilience by bouncing back after losing her first set to Jessica Bernales of Michigan (2-6) by winning the second set (6-3), although she ultimately fell in the third set (3-6).
Morais had an intense match with Sofia Mazzucato from Xavier. After winning the first set 6-4 and dropping the second 2-6, Morais clinched victory in the final set with another 6-4 win.
Stasny ended her tournament run facing Ava Bruno of Michigan. She lost the first set in a tiebreaker (7-6) but came back strong to win the second set (6-2). In lieu of a full third set, they played to ten points where Stasny emerged victorious at 10-7.
The Spartans will return for more action at their indoor center next weekend during the Spartan Invite scheduled for November 1st to 2nd.
