Michigan State University men's basketball coach Tom Izzo addressed the media on the first day of practice, sharing insights from their recent trip to Spain and outlining his goals for the upcoming season.
"This is a little more informal than most opening days because we opened yesterday, and it's so different now. It used to be Midnight Madness and now we have a new way of looking at things," Izzo said. He added that the team has been practicing since their August trip to Spain, where they played several games against international competition.
Izzo reflected on the team's performance in Spain: "In that Spain trip I thought we played pretty well. It was hard to get a feel because I had so many guys that I wanted to play, so I kept guys from 12 to 20 minutes." He highlighted individual performances, noting Jaxon Kohler's strong play and Xavier Booker's standout game with 19 points in one half.
The coach expressed optimism about his team's toughness compared to last year: "The biggest thing is I think we are a lot tougher team than we were last year." He credited strength and conditioning coach Lorenzo Guess for significant improvements in players' physical conditions.
Two transfers have also made an impact. "Frankie led us in scoring over there, averaging 18 a game," Izzo said. Szymon Zapala's physical presence was noted as well.
On redshirt freshman guard Jeremy Fears Jr., Izzo commented on his progress despite not being fully recovered from an injury: "He's progressed, but what I have in those guards I've been very impressed with."
Izzo emphasized the program's goal of returning to championship caliber: "It's just about getting back in championship caliber. That's the biggest thing I want to see this team rise up to." He acknowledged past shortcomings and mentioned efforts to improve late-game situations.
Reflecting on entering his 30th year coaching, Izzo shared personal insights after undergoing hip replacement surgery: "You know I had my hip replaced this summer... don't wait too long because I feel so much better."
Discussing an upcoming exhibition game against Northern Michigan at the Superior Dome, Izzo revealed it stemmed from personal connections and a desire for unique experiences for his players: "I called up there and said I want to play a game up there... It's neat for me."
Izzo concluded by expressing enthusiasm for showing his players where he started his career: "I want them to see everybody started somewhere."
