Szymon Zapala, a graduate student and center for Michigan State University's basketball team, has aspirations of playing professionally after graduation. "I want to play professionally, that was my goal when I came to the States," Zapala said. Originally from Zaborze, Poland, he attended SMS PZkosz Wladyslawowo for high school and previously played at Longwood and Utah State.
Zapala chose Michigan State for several reasons. "A few of the most important ones were because of the culture... how people CARE about this program," he explained. He emphasized the sense of family within the team and his ambition to compete for a national championship.
For newcomers to Michigan State basketball, Zapala advises readiness and appreciation for the opportunity. "Be ready to work. Realize what's in front of you," he stated.
If given a chance to play another position or sport, Zapala would choose point guard or ice hockey respectively. Despite his interest in ice hockey during his youth, he noted his size as a limiting factor. He also expressed an interest in American football due to its physicality.
Zapala does not actively engage with social media but enjoys personal interactions more. He is excited about attending football and ice hockey games at Michigan State.
When asked about pre-game music preferences, Zapala kept it private but mentioned an interest in country music influenced by his roommate at Utah State.
His dream vacation involves spending time with family back home in Poland. Reflecting on Big Ten basketball, he appreciates its competitiveness: "I'm excited for how competitive this league is."
Describing Coach Izzo as a mentor, Zapala values his comprehensive knowledge of basketball. He characterized Michigan State basketball players with one word: toughness.
For a hypothetical movie portrayal, Zapala suggested Michael Lewis due to their resemblance according to others.
Zapala prides himself on being open and communicative: "I love talking to people and getting to know people." His favorite aspect of East Lansing has been the supportive community both within and outside the program.
