The 1952-53 Michigan State University (MSU) hockey team, led by Head Coach Amo Bessone, concluded their season with an overall record of 5 wins, 16 losses, and 1 tie. Within the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League (MCHL), they finished seventh with a conference record of 2 wins and 16 losses.
The team's roster included players such as Gerald Bergin, Henry Campanini, Dick Northey, Dick Lord, John Mayes, and John Shackleford in the front row. The back row featured Gordie King, James Ward, Bob Revou, George Bolton, John Thomas, Robert Hansen, Derio Nicoli, Weldy Olsen, John Gipp along with Manager Rob Roy.
Throughout the season, MSU secured victories against St. Lawrence on December 5th with a score of 3-2 and Ontario Agricultural College on January 22nd and 23rd with scores of 13-1 and 7-1 respectively. They also defeated Michigan Tech on February 6th with a close score of 2-1 and again on February 20th in overtime with a score of 6-5.
However, the team faced several defeats during the season including two consecutive losses to North Dakota on December 26th and December 27th both ending at a score of 4-5 in overtime for one game. Additionally notable were their matches against Denver at the end of December where they lost twice by narrow margins.
Their matchups against rival teams like Michigan resulted in significant losses including a defeat on January 14th where they scored only twice compared to Michigan's ten goals. Another challenging series was against Minnesota in early March where MSU fell short both times.
Despite these challenges throughout their season run in the MCHL standings showed room for improvement as they ended up at seventh place.
