Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand claimed his first collegiate tournament victory at the Michigan State Open, held in Jenison Field House. Competing in the 125-pound freshman/sophomore bracket, Weiand led Michigan State University to a successful day with three finalists and nine total placewinners.
"I'm very proud of our guys for wrestling hard in their first tournament of the year," said MSU head wrestling coach Roger Chandler. "Caleb Weiand came out and scored a lot of points to earn his first tournament victory for us. The MSU Open always has a strong field, and this year was no different."
This event marked the start of Michigan State's wrestling season. The team will next participate in the Black Knight Invitational on November 24 and the Midlands Championships in December. A dual meet at Ohio University is scheduled for November 17.
Weiand advanced to finals alongside fellow redshirt freshmen Jack Conley (157) and Cory Thomas (184), both finishing second after falling in their championship bouts. True freshman Mason Stewart secured fourth place in his bracket after losing in the semifinals.
The Spartans also saw five wrestlers fight back to secure placements in the open bracket competition. Notably, Remy Cotton placed third at 197 pounds, narrowly defeating teammate Kael Wisler. Luke Daly rebounded from an initial loss to finish third at 184 pounds.
Additionally, three Spartans reached the consolation quarterfinals but did not advance further. Ryan Boucher made significant progress by winning four matches at 174 pounds, while true freshman Brodie Dominique won two matches to reach his bracket's consolation quarters.
The detailed results highlight individual performances across various weight classes as MSU wrestlers demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the competition.
