Michigan State offensive guard Luke Newman is set to participate in the 100th East-West Shrine Bowl on Thursday, January 30, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game will be broadcast on the NFL Network starting at 8 p.m.
Newman, who transferred from Holy Cross and lettered for the Spartans in 2024, will play for the West team. He has been training this week under the observation of NFL personnel.
Hailing from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Newman has played 52 collegiate games over five seasons. His career includes 40 games at Holy Cross between 2020-23 and all 12 games with Michigan State University (MSU) in 2024. During his time with MSU, he led the team with 739 offensive snaps and was recognized as the No. 9 offensive guard in the Big Ten by Pro Football Focus during the regular season. Additionally, he received honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades from both coaches and media.
At Holy Cross, Newman was a two-time FCS All-American and a three-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree. He completed his bachelor's degree in economics there in 2024.
The East-West Shrine Bowl announced its All-Century Team last month to commemorate its centennial edition as "the oldest college football all-star game in the nation." Among those honored were three former Spartans: halfback Herb Adderley, offensive lineman Joe DeLamielleure, and wide receiver Andre Rison.
In its history spanning a century since originating in San Francisco in 1925, a total of 104 Spartans have participated in this event. It has been hosted across various locations including San Antonio, Houston, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Las Vegas, and Frisco. Notably, former Spartan head coaches Biggie Munn (1952-53), Duffy Daugherty (1958-1968), and George Perles (1988) have served as head coaches for this game while Darryl Rogers was an assistant coach in 1980.
Since its inception in 1925, proceeds from the East-West Shrine Bowl have supported Shriners Children's mission to provide specialized care for children regardless of their families' financial or insurance status.
