Michigan State University (MSU) and the University of Michigan are set to face off in a highly anticipated hockey series. The games, scheduled for January 17 at Yost Ice Arena and January 18 at Mason Rink, mark the 349th and 350th meetings between these long-time rivals. Currently, Michigan leads the all-time series with a record of 181-143-24.
MSU, ranked No. 1 nationally with an 18-2-2 record overall and a 9-1-2 standing in Big Ten play, is experiencing its best season start since the 2000-01 campaign. "No. 1/1 Michigan State wraps up a lengthy stretch of road contests on Friday before returning home on Saturday," reads the official announcement. MSU's recent performance includes a nine-game unbeaten streak, making them one point ahead of Minnesota in the Big Ten standings.
The Spartans have benefited from strong performances by players like Charlie Stramel, Isaac Howard, and Daniel Russell, who have collectively scored 44 points in their last nine games together. Howard has particularly stood out with goals in each of MSU's last seven games.
Another key line for MSU includes Karsen Dorwart, Joey Larson, and Red Savage, who contributed significantly prior to the Penn State series with a combined total of 16 points over seven games.
On defense, pairs such as Patrick Geary with Maxim Štrbák and David Gucciardi alongside Nicklas Andrews have been effective contributors to MSU's offense.
In goalkeeping duties, Trey Augustine and Luca Di Pasquo have shared responsibilities. Di Pasquo has maintained impressive stats this season with a .933 save percentage across seven starts. Augustine also holds notable rankings within NCAA goaltending statistics despite missing some games due to World Juniors commitments.
