The 1990-91 Michigan State Hockey team, led by Head Coach Ron Mason, had a season marked by both triumphs and challenges. The team was crowned the Great Western Freezeout Champions, achieving an overall record of 17 wins, 18 losses, and 5 ties. In the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), they secured a fifth-place finish with a record of 14-13-5.

The roster included notable players such as Mike Gilmore, Shawn Heaphy, Jim Cummins, Jason Wolley, Walt Bartels, Joby Messier, Kerry Russell, and Jason Muzzatti. The coaching staff comprised Assistant Coaches Tom Newton and Tom Anastos.

During the season, Michigan State recorded significant victories against teams like Illinois-Chicago and Miami. They started strong with back-to-back wins against Illinois-Chicago on October 12th and 13th with scores of 8-3 and 9-1 respectively. The Spartans also managed to defeat Boston College on November 16th with a score of 4-2 but faced defeats in several matches including losses to Ferris State and Ohio State.

Despite mixed results throughout their games against other CCHA competitors like Lake Superior State and Bowling Green, the team's performance at the Great Western Freezeout in Inglewood was a highlight of their season.
