Taxpayers should be aware that state individual income tax returns are due by Monday, April 18, a recent press release from the Michigan Department of Treasury (Treasury) said.

Taxpayers can file their taxes electronically or have them postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service by 11:59 p.m. on the aforementioned date, the release said.

"If you haven't started thinking about filing your individual income tax return, now is the time to do so," Deputy State Treasurer Glenn White, who oversees the Treasury's Revenue Services programs, said in the release. "There is still plenty of time left to file your tax return. Consider e-filing to ensure an accurate return and timely refund."

Filing your taxes electronically and choosing direct-deposit refund are easy and safe, with over 4.8 million Michiganders (88%) choosing the electronic route last year, the release said.

Taxpayers interesting in e-filing can visit mifastfile.org. Those interested in going the traditional route can pick up paper forms at public libraries and post offices in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, Department of Health and Human Services county offices, and Treasury field offices.

Taxpayers with questions about their tax return can utilize the Treasury eServices platform (https://etreas.michigan.gov/iit/home) for solutions, the release said. The 24/7 platform allows taxpayers to ask specific questions regarding taxes so they don't have to wait on the phone to speak to a customer service representative. The platform reportedly provides an answer typically within 24 to 48 hours. It also allows taxpayers to get real-time refund status updates, change contact information, and view and respond to communications.
