Michigan State University's gymnastics team secured a victory over Minnesota with a score of 197.475-196.800 during Alumni Day and National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Jenison Field House. This win improves the Spartans' record to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play, while handing the Gophers their first loss of the season, leaving them at 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference.
MSU head coach Mike Rowe expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "It was great being back in Jenison again, in front of our own fans, after our two-week stint on the road." He added that he was proud of the team's efforts as they continue to improve and become more consistent.
Junior Nikki Smith excelled by winning the all-around title with a season-high score of 39.575 and sharing the bars title with junior Sage Kellerman. Kellerman also shared the vault title with senior Gabrielle Stephen. Senior Skyla Schulte claimed both beam and floor titles.
The Spartans began strong on vault with a score of 49.425, leading Minnesota after one rotation. Kellerman and Stephen tied for the event title with scores of 9.900 each, marking a season high for Stephen.
On bars, MSU maintained control with a score of 49.400. Smith and Kellerman both scored 9.925s to share the event title, each setting or tying a season best.
A solid performance on beam earned MSU a lead after three rotations, with Schulte scoring a season-high 9.925 to secure her first beam title this year.
MSU concluded their performance on floor with a score of 49.375 in the final rotation, securing their victory as Schulte tied her season-high to win a share of the floor title alongside Minnesota's Mya Hooten.
Stephen finished second in the all-around behind Smith with a season-high tying score of 39.450.
