EAST LANSING, Mich. – Freshman guard Jase Richardson led No. 9 Michigan State to a comeback victory over Oregon with a career-high 29 points on Saturday at the Breslin Center. The Spartans overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to secure an 86-74 win in a Big Ten Conference men's basketball game.
This victory marked Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo's 353rd career Big Ten Conference win, tying him with former Indiana coach Bob Knight for the most in conference history.
Richardson scored 18 of his total points in the second half, leading four players who reached double figures. Junior forward Jaxon Kohler recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard Tre Holloman contributed 13 points and a game-high seven assists, while senior guard Jaden Akins added ten points.
With this win, Michigan State improved its record to 19-4 overall and 10-2 in the Big Ten Conference. Meanwhile, Oregon's record fell to 16-8 overall and 5-8 in league play.
In the game's recap, Michigan State began the second half trailing by fourteen points (50-36). The team managed to close the gap before taking control with an impressive run led by Akins and Holloman. After exchanging leads, MSU eventually pulled ahead for good following contributions from Akins and Kohler.
The Spartans demonstrated resilience after allowing Oregon to score fifty points in the first half. They held Oregon to just twenty-four points in the second half without conceding any three-pointers. Overall, MSU shot fifty percent from the floor and had a strong rebounding performance with a forty-to-twenty-seven advantage.
Michigan State now leads their all-time series against Oregon three-to-two. This victory also marks Coach Izzo's third win against Oregon as he continues building on his career achievements.
The Spartans will host Indiana next on Tuesday at the Breslin Center as they conclude their two-game homestand.
