Michigan State's softball team faced a challenging start to their 2025 season, falling in two games against the 16th-ranked Arizona at Hillenbrand Stadium. The Spartans lost the first game 15-0 and narrowly missed victory in the second, with a final score of 10-9.
In the opening game, Michigan State struggled offensively, managing only two hits from senior Mik Anthony and sophomore Kendall Smiley. Four pitchers took to the circle for Michigan State, with senior Madison Taylor starting but lasting just 1.2 innings before freshmen Carsyn Cassady and Ella Cunningham made their collegiate debuts. Sophomore Ava Mullen closed out the game for the Spartans. Arizona dominated with six home runs and scored seven runs in the second inning alone.
The second game saw a more competitive effort from Michigan State. Junior Kaelin Cash returned from an injury that sidelined her last season to deliver a two-run single early on, giving her team an initial lead. "Cash posted a multi-hit effort in her second game as a Spartan," showcasing her return to form.
Michigan State expanded their lead with junior Britain Beshears hitting a grand slam in the second inning. Freshman Jacey Schuler began strong in her pitching debut but was replaced by senior Faith Guidry after Arizona rallied for seven runs in the third inning. Guidry pitched effectively over 3.1 innings but ultimately took the loss.
Despite leading again later in the game thanks to home runs by juniors Sydney Doloszycki and Hannah Hawley, Michigan State couldn't hold off Arizona due to a critical throwing error that allowed two decisive runs for Arizona.
The Spartans will aim for their first win of the season as they face No. 11 Alabama and Western Michigan on day two of the Candrea Classic.
