The Michigan State women's basketball team experienced its first home defeat of the season at the Breslin Center, losing to Oregon with a score of 63-59. This loss ended the Spartans' five-game winning streak and brought their overall record to 17-4, while they stand at 7-3 in Big Ten play. Oregon improved to a 16-5 record, also holding a 7-3 standing in league contests.
The Spartans faced an 18-point deficit in the third quarter but managed to narrow it down gradually. Despite this effort, Oregon maintained its lead until the end. Grace VanSlooten and Julia Ayrault led Michigan State's scoring with 14 points each, with Ayrault adding nine rebounds. Theryn Hallock contributed 12 points alongside three assists and steals. For Oregon, Peyton Scott was the top scorer with 12 points.
Oregon began strongly by scoring six unanswered points before VanSlooten put Michigan State on the scoreboard. The Ducks quickly established an early lead, extending it to double digits within minutes of the game starting. By halftime, Oregon led by a score of 35-23.
In the third period, Michigan State attempted to reduce the gap but could not overtake Oregon's momentum as they reached their largest lead at 45-27 midway through the quarter. Entering the fourth quarter behind by fifteen points, Michigan State made a strong comeback attempt that fell short despite outscoring Oregon during this final period.
Michigan State will face Northwestern next on February 1st at Northwestern's home court. The game will be available for streaming on B1G+.
"Thursday's loss was the Spartans' first home defeat of the season," noted MSU representatives following their second-longest winning streak being snapped earlier in January against Ohio State.
Michigan State has shown resilience in recent games by holding opponents under seventy points consistently over six matches prior to facing Oregon. Their defensive efforts have limited opposing teams like Penn State and Rutgers effectively while maintaining competitive scores even when trailing after halftime periods frequently throughout this season thus far.
