Michigan State University's baseball player, Joseph Dzierwa, has been named the Big Ten Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America. The junior left-handed pitcher from Haskins, Ohio, joins Indiana's Devin Taylor and Hogan Denny in receiving preseason honors from the publication.
Dzierwa has also received recognition as a Perfect Game's Preseason Third-Team All-American and is ranked No. 121 on D1Baseball's Top 150 College Draft Prospect list. Last season, he was second in the Big Ten for innings pitched (84.0) and strikeouts (91), and third in WHIP (1.19). He recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts against Nebraska on May 17, surpassing his previous best of nine strikeouts achieved multiple times during the season.
In 2024, Dzierwa played a significant role in Michigan State's pitching staff accumulating 420 total strikeouts, ranking third on MSU's team strikeouts list since 2019. His personal tally of 91 strikeouts places him eighth on MSU's single-season Top 10 strikeouts list.
As he enters his junior year in 2025, Dzierwa aims to break into MSU's career top ten strikeouts list with only 19 more needed to reach the milestone shared by Mick VanVossen and Mickey Sinks at 180 strikeouts each.
The Spartans will commence their 2025 season against Western Michigan on February 14th in Cary, North Carolina.
