No. 1 Michigan State secured a 4-1 win against No. 10 Michigan on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena, marking the 350th meeting in their longstanding rivalry. The victory allowed Michigan State to split the weekend series after losing in overtime on Friday.

Charlie Stramel led the Spartans with two goals and an assist, while Isaac Howard contributed three assists, maintaining his position as the nation's leading scorer. "Howard is tied for the national lead in goals (18) and leads the nation with 36 points," according to game statistics.

Michigan State's Trey Augustine made 34 saves, including a notable performance in the second period with 19 saves. Matt Basgall and Shane Vansaghi scored power-play goals for MSU, contributing to their special teams' success.

The Spartans are now ahead by one point in the Big Ten standings over Minnesota, who they will face next weekend at home.

MSU's special teams were effective throughout the game, scoring twice on eight power plays and adding a shorthanded goal. The team improved its record to 10-0-1 in second games of weekend series this season.

In terms of penalties, both teams combined for a total of 72 minutes on Saturday compared to just six minutes on Friday. MSU had eight penalties for 24 minutes while Michigan accumulated 13 penalties totaling 48 minutes.

Stramel's performance marked his second career two-goal game and first shorthanded goal. His contributions have been significant this season as he surpasses his previous scoring records from Wisconsin.

Isaac Howard's assists brought his season total to match last year's performance as a sophomore. He continues to be a key player for MSU with consistent scoring contributions.

Trey Augustine's goaltending was crucial, especially during Michigan's offensive surge in the second period where he denied all attempts until TJ Hughes scored late in the third period for Michigan’s only goal.

Michigan State looks forward to maintaining its lead when it hosts Minnesota next week at Munn Arena.
