Michigan State University's wrestling team is set to face Buffalo in a non-conference dual at Jenison Field House on January 19. The Spartans, with a current season record of 2-0 against non-Big Ten opponents, aim to maintain their unbeaten streak. The match will be available for viewing on B1G+.
Historically, Michigan State has a perfect 3-0 record against Buffalo, with victories in 2017, 2018, and last year. The last encounter between the two teams in East Lansing was in 2018 when the Spartans won 23-12. Key players from that victory included Rayvon Foley, Alex Hrisopoulos, Jaden Enriquez, Logan Ritchie, Drew Hughes, and Cameron Caffey. In their most recent meeting last season at the UB Center for the Arts, Michigan State triumphed over Buffalo with a score of 26-9.
Redshirt freshman Remy Cotton has emerged as a standout performer for Michigan State this season. He is currently ranked #25/#23 at 197 pounds. Joining him in the rankings is redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza at 174 pounds, positioned at #31 after defeating Maryland's Branson John last weekend.
Buffalo enters this match with a challenging season record of 2-8 and is led by first-year head coach Donnie Vinson. Before his tenure at Buffalo, Vinson was an associate head coach at Cornell University. Notably, one of his former athletes from Cornell is Hunter Richard.
Buffalo's recent competition was nearly a month ago against SIUE where they lost 28-10. Last weekend saw them participate in the David H. Lehman '68 Franklin & Marshall Open where Hunter Shaut and Rafael Knapp both placed sixth in their respective categories.
Looking ahead for Michigan State, they will host two Big Ten duals next weekend against Indiana and Nebraska inside Jenison Field House.
