Michigan State University's sophomore goaltender, Trey Augustine, has been named to the 2025 Richter Award Watch List. This award is presented annually to the top goaltender in Division I men's ice hockey.
Augustine, from South Lyon, Michigan, is recognized as the youngest full-time starting goaltender in Division I hockey for the second consecutive season. Born in February 2005, he was a second-round draft pick by the Detroit Red Wings in 2023.
He has been included on the Watch List for two straight seasons due to his performance both in college and internationally. Augustine leads the Big Ten and ranks sixth nationally with 11 wins. He holds a save percentage of .931 and two shutouts this season. Additionally, he maintains a goals-against average (GAA) of 1.97.
This season Augustine has played 15 games and logged over 912 minutes on ice. Among his victories are significant wins against top-ranked teams as Michigan State boasts an overall record of 18-2-2.
In December and January, Augustine participated in the IIHF World Junior Championships with Team USA, securing a gold medal for a second year running. During this tournament, he achieved a .917 save percentage and a GAA of 2.52 over five games.
Remarkably, Augustine became one of only 19 goaltenders ever to make three WJC squads during their careers—an IIHF record—and surpassed Jack Campbell's previous record with his twelfth all-time victory at this event.
His international accolades include multiple medals: gold at World Juniors (2024), bronze (2023), silver (U18 World Championships - 2022), and another gold (U18 - 2023). Last spring marked his debut on Team USA's senior squad at Men's World Championship where he played four games alongside primarily NHL players.
The selection committee consisting of coaches, administrators, scouts, and media will narrow down nominees by early January before announcing three finalists at NCAA Frozen Four come April when they reveal this year's winner.
