Liisa Vehviläinen named Big Ten Player to Watch for spring 2025

Michigan State University's senior tennis player, Liisa Vehviläinen, has been recognized as a Big Ten Player to Watch for the upcoming spring 2025 season. The announcement was made by the conference on Monday.

Vehviläinen, originally from Turku, Finland, is the only senior on the Spartans' roster. During the fall season, she recorded a 3-4 win-loss record while dealing with an injury. She concluded her fall campaign with two victories at the MSU Spartan Invite held from November 1-3.

In the previous season, Vehviläinen achieved an 11-11 singles record during regular play and ranked third on her team with eight singles wins in dual matches. She played across the top three courts and secured a 4-3 record on courts two and three. Additionally, she won seven doubles matches, including a notable victory alongside Ayshe Can against Iowa's No. 81-ranked pair Daianne Hayashida and Vipasha Mehra.

The Michigan State women's tennis team will begin their 2025 schedule on January 17 in Spokane, Washington, facing Gonzaga. They will also compete against Washington State on January 19 in Spokane before hosting Xavier at home on January 24 at the MSU Tennis Center.

The list of players to watch for the Big Ten Women's Tennis includes athletes from various universities: Mckenna Schaefbauer (Illinois), Nicole Teodosescu (Indiana), Tereza Dejnozkova (Iowa), Kallista Liu (Maryland), Julia Fliegner (Michigan), Aiva Schmitz (Minnesota), Mika Dagan Fruchtman (Northwestern), Luciana Perry (Ohio State), Olivia Symons (Oregon), Patricia Grigoras (Penn State), Ece Gencer (Purdue), Zuzanna Frankowska (Rutgers), Anne Christine Lutkemeyer (UCLA), Grace Piper (USC), Erika Matsuda (Washington) and Taylor Cataldi (Wisconsin).
