Michigan State sophomore goaltender Trey Augustine has achieved a significant milestone in his hockey career by securing a second consecutive gold medal with Team USA at the IIHF U20 World Junior Championship. The tournament concluded on Sunday evening in Ottawa, where the American team triumphed over Finland in an overtime victory after overcoming a 3-1 deficit. This win marks the first time Team USA has won back-to-back gold medals at this event.
Augustine was among ten athletes who were part of both the 2024 and 2025 gold medal-winning teams. During this year's championship, he maintained a .917 save percentage and a 2.52 goals-against average across five games out of seven played by Team USA.
Trey Augustine is recognized as one of the most promising American prospects in hockey. In the semifinals against Czechia, he became the winningest goaltender in Team USA history at the IIHF World Junior Championship with eleven wins, surpassing Jack Campbell's previous record of ten wins. His participation in three U20 World Junior Championships has earned him two gold medals and one bronze medal since his debut in 2023. Additionally, he holds both silver (2022) and gold (2023) medals from the U18 Worlds before joining Michigan State University (MSU). Last spring, Augustine made his debut on the men's senior World Championship squad, playing four games alongside primarily NHL players.
In college hockey, Augustine helped MSU secure Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles during his freshman year. He continues to be the youngest starting goaltender in Division I hockey for a second consecutive season. Before leaving for the World Juniors, he recorded an impressive 11-2-1 record with a 1.98 GAA and .930 save percentage for MSU Spartans, who are currently ranked No. 1 nationally and tied for first place in Big Ten standings.
Drafted by the Detroit Red Wings as their second-round pick (41st overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft, Augustine returns to East Lansing to continue MSU's season with an upcoming series against Penn State scheduled for January 10-11.
