Senior guard Jaden Akins led Michigan State to a victory over Western Michigan with 18 points, as the Spartans secured an 80-62 win at the Breslin Center. Akins scored 14 of his points in the first half, contributing to a 13-point lead for the Spartans. Junior center Carson Cooper added a career-high 13 points and six rebounds.
Michigan State improved their record to 11-2, while Western Michigan fell to 3-9. The Spartans held a halftime lead of 37-24, but Western Michigan narrowed it down early in the second half before MSU regained control.
Despite committing 17 turnovers, Michigan State shot 50% from the floor and dominated on free throws with a 90.9% success rate. They also out-rebounded Western Michigan by seven boards.
Coach Tom Izzo's team maintained their winning streak against Western Michigan, extending it to nine games. The Spartans have been successful this season when leading at halftime and when shooting better than their opponents.
Key players included Szymon Zapala with eight points and nine rebounds, Tre Holloman with nine points and five assists, and Jeremy Fears Jr., who provided six assists.
Michigan State will return to Big Ten Conference play against Ohio State on January 3rd.
