Michigan State University's hockey team is set to participate in the 58th annual Great Lakes Invitational (GLI) at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. The event will take place on December 29 and 30, with Michigan State facing Northern Michigan in a semifinal match on Sunday at 7 p.m. The tournament's consolation and championship games are scheduled for Monday, December 30, at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
"Michigan State will participate in the 58th annual Great Lakes Invitational this week, and is in search of its 13th all-time title," stated a press release about the upcoming games. The Spartans have a history of success at the GLI, having secured twelve titles previously, their last win being in 2009.
Currently ranked No.1 nationally with a record of 13-2-1, Michigan State returns from the holiday break after completing two Big Ten series away from home against Wisconsin and Minnesota. "The Spartans return from holiday break with a 13-2-1 record and No.1 national ranking," according to the release.
The team's defense has been particularly strong this season, allowing just an average of 1.88 goals per game which ranks them first in the Big Ten and fourth nationally. They also boast a scoring margin of +1.56, placing them second in the Big Ten conference.
Offensively, players like Charlie Stramel, Isaac Howard, and Daniel Russell have made significant contributions recently. "Over the last three games, Charlie Stramel is centering a line with Isaac Howard and Daniel Russell," noted the release. Additionally, Michigan State's defensive pairs have been effective contributors to their offensive strategy.
Sophomore goalie Luca Di Pasquo is expected to start between the pipes for Michigan State during this year's GLI following solid performances earlier this season.
The games will be broadcasted by Gray Television across various channels including WILX-TV in Lansing and BTN+. Fans can also listen to radio broadcasts via WJIM AM or follow online through Spartan Media Network.
