Three Michigan State University football players have been honored by being named to the East-West Shrine Bowl All-Century Team. The announcement comes as part of the celebrations for the 100th edition of this long-standing college football all-star game.
The selected Spartans include halfback Herb Adderley, offensive lineman Joe DeLamielleure, and wide receiver Andre Rison. This recognition places them among an elite group that includes 80 Pro Football Hall of Fame members. Both Adderley and DeLamielleure are already enshrined in Canton, Ohio.
All three players are also inducted into the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame, highlighting their significant contributions to the sport during their college careers.
The upcoming East-West Shrine Bowl will take place on January 30, 2025, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The event will be broadcast nationally on the NFL Network. Luke Newman from Michigan State has accepted an invitation to participate in this year's game after starting all 12 games for his team in 2024.
Historically, a total of 103 Spartans have played in the East-West Shrine Bowl since its inception in San Francisco in 1925. The game was held there until 2005 and has since moved across various cities including San Antonio, Houston, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Las Vegas, and Frisco.
Beyond showcasing football talent, the East-West Shrine Bowl supports Shriners Children's hospitals by providing care for children with orthopedic conditions and other medical needs without considering families' financial status or insurance coverage.
Herb Adderley played at Michigan State before joining the Green Bay Packers as a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. He won three Super Bowls and five Pro Bowls during his career with Green Bay and Dallas Cowboys.
Joe DeLamielleure earned first-team All-American honors at Michigan State before being drafted by Buffalo Bills. He enjoyed a successful NFL career with multiple Pro Bowl selections and consecutive game starts over thirteen seasons.
Andre Rison led Michigan State's receiving records during his tenure before entering the NFL with Indianapolis Colts as a first-round draft pick. Over twelve professional seasons, he became a five-time Pro Bowler and contributed significantly to several teams including Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs.
These players join a long list of former Spartans who have participated in this prestigious all-star event throughout its history.
