Michigan State gymnastics ranked No.11 in WCGA preseason poll

Michigan State University's gymnastics team is set to begin the 2025 season with a No. 11 ranking in the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Preseason Poll, as announced by the organization on Tuesday. This marks the fifth consecutive year that MSU has been included in the preseason poll, which ranks the top 36 teams ahead of each season. The Spartans have consistently secured a top-15 position over the past three seasons.

MSU is among 11 Big Ten Conference teams featured in this year's poll. UCLA, a new addition to the conference, leads at No. 10, followed closely by Michigan State. Other Big Ten teams include Michigan at No. 13, Ohio State at No. 16, Minnesota at No. 18, Penn State at No. 21, Illinois at No. 22, Nebraska at No. 23, Maryland at No. 24, Washington at No. 26 and Iowa at No. 29; Rutgers also received votes.

The Spartans will face four ranked non-conference opponents during their upcoming season: Florida (No. 3), Cal (No. 4), Alabama (No. 6), and North Carolina (No. 36).

In their previous season, MSU achieved significant success by securing their second consecutive Big Ten regular-season title with an undefeated record of nine wins in conference play and winning their first Big Ten Championship before a sold-out crowd on March 23rd at Jenison Field House. Additionally, they advanced to their third consecutive NCAA Regional Final.

The team retains six of its seven All-Big Ten honorees from last year, including Skyla Schulte and Nikki Smith who qualified for the NCAA Championships individually last season as well; Schulte made history for MSU by winning its first-ever Big Ten all-around title while earning Second Team All-America honors – becoming MSU's first two-time NCAA All-American gymnast.

Fans can look forward to seeing MSU host its annual Green and White Meet on Saturday December14th starting from1p.m., followed by officially kicking off their2025 campaign against Western Michigan University on January4that4p.m., both events taking place within Jenison Field House premises.
