Michigan State University's track and field teams marked a successful start to their indoor season with notable performances at two events. The Spartans were led by Rachel Forsyth, who set a new school record at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston.
Rachel Forsyth, named Big Ten Cross Country Freshman of the Year, broke the school's 3000m record with a time of 8:59.4, surpassing the previous record of 9:01.25 set by Rachel Schulist in 2015. Forsyth finished eighth among collegiate performers in this event.
At the GVSU Holiday Open in Allendale, Michigan, several Spartans excelled in both field and running events. Jessica Stieb claimed first place in the shot put with a throw of 16.11m and achieved a personal best in the weight throw with a second-place finish at 17.50m. Margaret Jones debuted impressively for MSU, winning the weight throw invite with a distance of 17.98m.
In women's weight throw, Elle Adrian and Valadian Pallett secured first and second places respectively, with Adrian achieving a personal best of 21.15m. Leila Barmore won the women's long jump title with a leap of 5.89m during her Spartan debut.
Sophia Mettes and Natalie Blake dominated the pole vault event by finishing first and second respectively; Mettes vaulted to victory at 3.90m while Blake reached 3.80m.
For men's events, Carter Bissell placed fifth in long jump (6.95m) while Jalen Nelson tied for seventh (6.83). Dalton DeBeau set a personal best in weight throw at fourth place with 17.00m.
On track events, Kaia Scheffler secured second place in the 60m hurdles clocking at 8.56 seconds; Barmore came sixth at 8.94 seconds while Amani Nuels finished fifth in the finals of the 60m race crossing at 7.73 seconds.
In men's track events, Terrance Muex took third place in the 200m dash clocking at 48.28 seconds; Logan Allen was third in the finals of the 60m race timing it at 6.84 seconds followed closely by Cameron Cheetam who was fourth crossing it just one-hundredth behind Allen's time.
