Michigan State University emerged victorious against Wisconsin in an overtime hockey match, securing a 3-2 win. The game took place in Madison, Wisconsin, with Michigan State ranked as the number one team. Isaac Howard scored the decisive goal three minutes into the overtime period.
The winning play was described by Michigan State Hockey on Twitter: "Isaac Howard ENDS THIS ONE IN OT. Hard work on this one in the offensive zone and Spartans get the game two victory. Assists to Basgall and Stramel."
During an extended shift in overtime, players Howard, Charlie Stramel, and Matt Basgall were crucial for MSU's offense. From his knees, Howard managed to control the puck in the left circle and passed it to Stramel above the faceoff dot. Stramel then directed it across to Basgall who found Howard at the left post for a successful shot past Wisconsin's goalie Tommy Scarfone.
Initially trailing 2-0 early in the second period, MSU responded with a power-play goal by Stramel. Joey Larson equalized less than three minutes into the third period. Both teams engaged in intense gameplay during the final 17 minutes of regulation time.
The Badgers initially led with goals scored in both periods before MSU's comeback began. They effectively disrupted MSU's attempts at creating offensive plays until Stramel's power-play goal shifted momentum towards Michigan State.
Trey Augustine made 29 saves for Michigan State while Scarfone stopped 33 shots for Wisconsin. Christian Fitzgerald contributed a goal and an assist for Wisconsin alongside Owen Lindmark’s goal.
Michigan State is scheduled to play their last series before a holiday break next weekend against Minnesota.
