Michigan State University's nine-game winning streak came to an end with a 4-0 loss against the University of Wisconsin on Friday night. The Spartans, ranked No. 1, had not lost since October 11 and held a tight 1-0 game through two periods before Wisconsin pulled away in the third.
Wisconsin's Quinn Finley scored twice in the third period, including an empty-net goal, while Tyson Dyck and Owen Melenbacher contributed to the scoreboard as well. Goalie Tommy Scarfone was instrumental in securing the victory for Wisconsin with 26 saves. Michigan State's Trey Augustine stopped 22 shots but conceded three goals.
The teams will meet again on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, with coverage on the Big Ten Network.
Michigan State had allowed four goals for the first time this season, surpassing their previous high of three. They also recorded their third consecutive game with double-digit blocked shots, matching a season-high of 14 blocks.
In the game's first period, Tyson Dyck opened scoring for Wisconsin late in the period after receiving a pass from Zach Shultz. Michigan State outshot Wisconsin in the second period but failed to score despite Daniel Russell hitting the crossbar.
Wisconsin capitalized on a power play early in the third period when Gavin Morrisey set up Cody Laskosky to assist Quinn Finley’s goal. Owen Melanbacher added another goal shortly after, taking advantage of a scramble near Michigan State's net.
Finley's empty-net goal secured Wisconsin's win and ended Michigan State's unbeaten run.
