The Spartans managed to tie the game early in the second half and were trailing by just four points midway through. Freshman guard Jase Richardson led Michigan State with a career-high of 18 points. Senior guard Jaden Akins contributed 12 points and five rebounds, while senior forward Frankie Fidler added 10 points and five rebounds.
With this result, Michigan State's record stands at 5-2 overall, whereas Memphis remains undefeated at 6-0.
The game saw the Spartans tying it at 36-all after a three-pointer from junior forward Jaxon Kohler and a layup from redshirt freshman guard Jeremy Fears Jr. Despite efforts to close the gap, including baskets from Richardson and Fidler late in the game, Memphis maintained their lead until the end.
Michigan State struggled in certain areas; they were outscored in the paint by Memphis (33-22) and committed 13 turnovers which led to 22 points for their opponents. The team's next challenge will be against either North Carolina or Auburn as they compete for third place on November 27th.
