Freshman guard Jase Richardson played a key role in Michigan State's 72-56 victory over Colorado in the first round of the Maui Invitational. The game took place at the Lahaina Civic Center on Monday afternoon. Richardson scored a career-high 13 points, contributing to a team effort where ten different players scored for Michigan State.
In addition to Richardson's performance, senior center Szymon Zapala added seven points and secured eight rebounds. Senior forward Frankie Fidler contributed nine points and six rebounds, while redshirt freshman guard Jeremy Fears Jr. finished with eight points and provided six assists.
Michigan State improved its record to 5-1 after winning three consecutive games, while Colorado fell to 4-1 overall.
The Spartans led by 13 points at halftime with a score of 38-25. Colorado narrowed the gap early in the second half with an 8-2 run but could not sustain their momentum. Key plays from Fidler and Zapala helped Michigan State regain control of the game.
Richardson's three-pointer increased the lead back to double digits, initiating a decisive run that gave Michigan State a commanding advantage. The Spartans maintained their lead throughout the rest of the game, eventually securing their largest margin at 66-46.
Michigan State's defense limited Colorado to just two field goals during an important stretch in the first half and held them to 37% shooting overall. The Spartans dominated in several statistical categories including rebounding (42-29) and points in the paint (50-28).
This victory marked Michigan State's fourth win against Colorado historically and improved Head Coach Tom Izzo’s career record significantly. The team also boasts an impressive all-time record in the Maui Invitational tournament.
Next, Michigan State will face Memphis in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday, November 26th. The game is scheduled for broadcast on ESPN.
