Michigan State volleyball achieved a 3-0 victory over Maryland on Saturday at the Breslin Student Events Center. The team displayed strong performance with a .320 hitting percentage.
Head coach Leah Johnson expressed satisfaction with the team's effort, stating, "I was proud of the team's performance today. I challenged them this morning at serve and pass and pushed them to make sure our engines were ready for this match. Our hitting percentage was exceptional, our point management was exceptional. Akasha Anderson hitting .400, if you remember last time we played Maryland she struggled in that match, so this was a huge turnaround for her. Our setters made good choices of when to use her."
With this win, Michigan State's record improves to 12-17 (5-13 B1G), while Maryland drops to 13-16 (4-14 B1G). Michigan State is scheduled to play its final home match against Northwestern next Wednesday.
Senior Aliyah Moore led the Spartans with a season-high 12 kills. She was supported by Taylor Preston and Akasha Anderson, who added 12 and 11 kills respectively. Zuzanna Kulig contributed six blocks and Nalani Iosia had 12 digs.
The Spartans outperformed Maryland with a .320 hitting percentage compared to Maryland's .158. They also excelled in blocking with an 11-to-6.5 advantage over Maryland.
Throughout the match, Michigan State maintained control after breaking away early in each set. Key performances included Kulig's block in set one, Preston's kills in set two, and Moore's consistent scoring in set three.
The upcoming match against Northwestern will mark Senior Night for Michigan State.
