Michigan State men's tennis player Ozan Baris has advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Individual Championships. In a quarterfinal match held in Waco, Texas, Baris defeated Arizona's Jay Friend with scores of 6-1, 7-5.
Baris dominated the first set by keeping Friend on defense with consistent shots. "I kind of just kept my head down and the points turned my way," Baris commented on his performance. Despite facing challenges at the beginning of the second set, he managed to overcome an early deficit to secure victory.
Baris acknowledged feeling uneasy during parts of the match, especially in the second set. He stated, "There was one opportunity where I didn't do myself any favors." Reflecting on missing a crucial backhand return early in that set, he noted how it could have been pivotal. However, he credited Friend for playing well and making it difficult.
Next up for Baris is a semifinal clash against DK Suresh Ekambaram from Wake Forest scheduled for Saturday at noon Eastern Time.
This appearance marks Baris' second consecutive trip to the national semifinals. Last spring, he reached this stage before losing to Filip Planinsek of Alabama.
