Michigan State athletics gears up for a week full of competitions

Michigan State Athletics is set for a busy week with various teams competing in significant events.

In men's tennis, Junior Ozan Baris and redshirt sophomore Aristotelis Thanos are advancing at the NCAA Individual Championships held at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Both players progressed to the Round of 32 after winning their opening matches.

The women's cross country team will participate in the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, following an at-large bid after finishing fourth at the Great Lakes Regional. "It's the 24th straight year the Spartan women have been represented at the NCAA Championships." Rachel Forsyth and Kaitlyn Hynes earned notable finishes last weekend. Riley Hough also secured a spot for the men’s team as an individual competitor.

The men's basketball team is heading to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational from November 25-27. The Spartans will face Colorado Buffaloes first. Head coach Tom Izzo, marking his fifth appearance in this tournament, began his career with a win here back in 1995.

In women's basketball, Michigan State will host Detroit Mercy before traveling to Palm Springs for the Acrisure Classic. Grace VanSlooten currently leads MSU in scoring.

Spartan football returns home to face Purdue on Friday night. Michigan State holds a historical advantage over Purdue with more wins overall and specifically in East Lansing.

The volleyball team begins a three-match homestand against Oregon and Maryland later this week. Recently recognized was Nalani Iosia as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after two victories last weekend.

Women's soccer moves into the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament against Texas after defeating Western Michigan.

Ice hockey takes on an exhibition match against US National Team Development Program in Plymouth, Michigan. Notably, head coach Adam Nightingale previously led this program before joining MSU.

Lastly, wrestling travels to West Point for the Black Knight Invitational following a victory over Ohio University. The Spartans continue their streak of non-conference dual wins dating back to 2020.
