Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault and junior forward Grace VanSlooten both achieved their first double-doubles of the season, leading Michigan State's women's basketball team to a 79-42 victory over Western Michigan on Sunday at University Arena. This win marks MSU's second consecutive 5-0 start under head coach Robyn Fralick.
VanSlooten contributed 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Ayrault added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate also played a key role with 11 points and three steals. The Spartans' defense limited the Broncos to single-digit scores in both the first and fourth quarters, forcing a total of 25 turnovers and securing 14 steals.
Hannah Spitzley was Western Michigan's top scorer with 15 points, eight of which were scored in the first quarter. The Spartans established an early lead, ending the first quarter ahead by 23-8 after several scoring runs.
In the second quarter, Michigan State's defense excelled again by forcing numerous turnovers. The team expanded its lead significantly with contributions from various players including Tate who ended the half with 11 points.
The third quarter saw Western Michigan attempt a comeback with a brief scoring run, but MSU maintained control despite shooting only 35.3 percent during this period. In the final quarter, MSU regained momentum with an initial eight-point streak and extended their lead further before rotating in bench players for more game time experience.
Michigan State will next face Detroit Mercy at home on November 20th.
