Michigan State men's tennis player Aristotelis Thanos has secured a spot in the NCAA Individual Championships. The redshirt junior will compete alongside his teammate, junior Ozan Baris, in Waco, Texas, from November 19 to 24 at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
Baris qualified for the championships by winning the ITA Midwest Regionals on October 14, marking him as the first Michigan State men's tennis player to achieve this feat. Thanos earned his place after a series of matches at the ITA Sectionals. He defeated Preston Stearns from Ohio State in a closely contested match with scores of 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Thanos then won against William Mroz from Illinois with scores of 6-3, 6-3 and secured his qualification by defeating Calvin Mueller of Nebraska with scores of 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.
Other notable performances include freshman Matthew Forbes' victory over Togan Tokac from Texas A&M with scores of 7-5, 7-5 before losing to Oskar Brostrom Poulsen from Baylor. Forbes also participated in doubles with senior Max Sheldon; they won against Alemany/Kouame from Memphis but lost to Young/Swenson from Michigan.
Sheldon experienced mixed results in singles play as well. He lost a tight match against Gavin Young from Michigan but later defeated Luis Felipe Miguel from Tulsa with ease.
Meanwhile, at the Big Ten Indoors in Wisconsin, freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev delivered a strong performance by going three wins out of five matches during the week. He achieved victories over Sachiv Kumar (WIS), Nick Herdoiza (NU), and Henrik Villanger (PUR) while facing defeats against Nicholas Steiglehner (MICH) and Max Bengtsson (NU).
Further details regarding Thanos and Baris's participation in the NCAA Individual Championships will be provided later.
