EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's soccer faced a narrow defeat against Rutgers, losing 1-0 on Spartan Senior Celebration Day at DeMartin Stadium. The match saw Rutgers score in the 83rd minute to secure their win. Despite Michigan State's efforts, including a missed penalty kick with 43 seconds remaining, the Spartans could not equalize.

Following the game, Michigan State honored seniors Zack Babiak, Efosa Emovon, Levin Gerhardt, Sean Kerrigan, and Shion Soga for their contributions to the team. MSU head coach Damon Rensing expressed pride in his players' commitment to the program. "It's not about one loss," Rensing stated. "All these guys have made a great commitment to Michigan State Soccer."

The loss concluded MSU's regular season with a record of 5-7-4 overall and 4-4-2 in Big Ten Conference play. Rutgers improved to 6-9-2 overall and 3-6-1 in conference action.

Rensing reflected on the game's outcome: "I thought we did a lot of good things...but just didn't do enough to really warrant a goal." He noted the team's late response after conceding but emphasized the need for consistent performance from kickoff.

The first half ended without goals as both teams had chances thwarted by strong defenses. Rutgers held a slight edge in shots during this period. After halftime, offensive pressure increased from both sides until Francesco Di Ponzio scored for Rutgers following an advantageous pass.

Despite several attempts by Michigan State to level the score, they were unable to break through Rutgers' defense or goalkeeper Ciarn Dalton's efforts.

Michigan State now turns its attention to the upcoming Big Ten Tournament set to begin on November 7 at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.
