Michigan State University's wrestling team began its season with a victory over American University in Washington, D.C., winning 20-12. The Spartans secured five matches, including redshirt freshman Remy Cotton's significant 197-pound tech fall win.
"The guys showed some resilience and toughness today throughout the entire dual," said Michigan State head wrestling coach Roger Chandler. "I was very encouraged to see that they were able to stay tough throughout each match. We have a very youthful team, and they showed poise at critical moments which was positive. I give them a lot of credit for staying in the moment and focusing on themselves in each match."
The victory marks Michigan State's seventh consecutive season opening with a win, extending their streak of non-conference dual wins to 23 since 2020.
The event started at 125 pounds with Caleb Weiand battling hard but losing narrowly after riding time considerations, finishing 18-17 against Coen Bainey from American University. Andy Hampton got Michigan State on the board by winning his bout at 133 pounds with a score of 2-0.
American regained an edge following the 141-pound contest when Jaden Crumpler lost to Jack Maida by a close margin of 6-4. Clayton Jones III tied up the dual again for MSU with his win at 149 pounds, securing a narrow victory of 10-9.
Michigan State took its first lead after Braden Stauffenberg's performance at 157 pounds ended in a decision victory of 3-1. Despite DJ Shannon's efforts at the next weight class, he fell short against Kaden Milheim, concluding their bout at 7-3 in favor of American University.
Ceasar Garza added another win for Michigan State with an impressive return performance scoring an 18-12 victory. Luke Daly followed suit by adding points through strong defensive maneuvers resulting in his own win by decision, bringing the score to MSU’s favor before Remy Cotton’s decisive technical fall clinched it further.
Coach Chandler highlighted Cotton’s performance: "You saw what Remy Cotton can do today," said Chandler. "He stayed aggressive and was attacking the entire time. He has that mindset to keep attacking and because of that he was able to secure the team win for us today."
Max Vanadia also made his debut but lost closely against Will Jarrell ranked No.26 nationally; however, his competitive spirit kept him within striking distance until the end.
Next up for Michigan State is their annual home event at Jenison Field House during the Michigan State Open scheduled for November 9th starting early morning as teams prepare for another round of competitions.
