The Michigan State men's soccer team secured a 2-2 draw against top-ranked Ohio State on Tuesday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. The Spartans, now holding a record of 5-6-4 overall and 4-3-2 in Big Ten play, remain fourth in the conference standings with 14 points. Ohio State stands at 11-1-3 overall and 6-1-2 in league action.
MSU head coach Damon Rensing commented on the match: "What a heckuva college soccer game. I have to give our guys a ton of credit. We went on the road against the No.1 team in the country; we were against the wind in the first half. We gave up a goal we usually don't like to give up, but we fought hard in the second half."
Ohio State took an early lead in the 13th minute when Ashton Bilow assisted David Wrona, who scored past MSU's goalkeeper Zac Kelly. Despite aggressive attempts by sophomore Richie Ludwig, Michigan State ended the first half trailing 1-0.
In the second half, senior midfielder Sean Kerrigan equalized for Michigan State in the 63rd minute after receiving an assist from Ludwig. Just three minutes later, Ludwig scored his second goal of the season with help from Colin Arce, putting MSU ahead.
The Buckeyes responded with David Ajagbe scoring his sixth goal of the season in the 79th minute, assisted by Donovan Williams and Luciano Pechota.
Kelly made seven saves during the match as Ohio State out-shot Michigan State 23-14 overall and 12-6 in the second half.
Michigan State will host Rutgers for their Senior Day on Sunday, November 3rd at 1 p.m., honoring seniors Zack Babiak, Efosa Emovon, Sean Kerrigan, Vedad Kovac, Levin Gerhardt, and Shion Soga.
