Northwestern University secured the Big Ten title with a 5-0 victory over Michigan State University in East Lansing. Despite a strong performance from MSU's goalkeeper Lyra Gavino, who recorded 17 saves, Northwestern's offense proved too powerful.
Gavino faced 22 attempts in the first half and kept the game scoreless for 30 minutes. However, Northwestern broke through after halftime, scoring three goals in the third quarter. Regan Cornelius redirected a corner play at 32:23 to open the scoring. Elaine Velthuizen followed with a tipped shot at 39:40, and Ashley Sessa added another goal just before the end of the period.
In the fourth quarter, Northwestern extended their lead with two more goals from corner plays. Maddie Zimmer scored at just over ten minutes remaining, followed by Ilsa Tromp less than a minute later.
Gavino's performance marked her third double-digit save game this season. She had previously set her career-best with 17 saves against Penn State and made ten saves in a non-conference match against Miami.
Ashley Sessa contributed significantly to Northwestern's win with one goal and two assists. Regan Cornelius and Maddie Zimmer each added three points with a goal and an assist. Annabel Skubisz made two saves for Northwestern's shutout victory.
MSU will conclude its regular season next Friday on the road against Indiana.
