Michigan State University's women's tennis team commenced its home events with the Michigan State Classic, sponsored by Auto-Owners Insurance, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center in East Lansing. The competition began on Friday morning with singles matches involving players from Michigan State, Northwestern, and Xavier.

The Spartans were represented by freshman Amara Brahmbhatt, juniors Matilde Morais and Issey Purser, and redshirt-sophomore Natalie Stasny. Purser quickly secured a victory against Xavier's Elizabeth Pendergast with scores of 6-3, 6-4. Brahmbhatt faced Northwestern's Kiley Rabiohns in her debut match but was defeated 6-2, 6-4. Stasny also lost to Katya Shepherd from Northwestern with scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Morais had a challenging match against Erica Jessel of Northwestern. After losing the first set 4-6, she managed to win the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-1) but ultimately lost the final set 3-6.

In doubles play during the afternoon session, Morais paired with Purser while Brahmbhatt teamed up with Stasny. The duo of Brahmbhatt/Stasny won their match against Northwestern's Riester/Shepherd with a score of 6-3. Meanwhile, Morais/Purser engaged in a competitive match against Notre Dame's Hanford/Molnar that ended in an extended tiebreaker. Despite their efforts, they were narrowly defeated by Notre Dame's pair at 7-6 (9-7).

The tournament continues on Saturday morning at 10 a.m., where fans can keep track of results and watch live through Tournament Central.
