Michigan State University's field hockey team faced a narrow defeat against Penn State on Sunday, with Ella Jennes scoring the decisive goal in overtime. The match concluded with a 2-1 victory for Penn State, ranked 16th nationally.

Jennes' goal came just 31 seconds before the end of the first overtime period. She maneuvered her way to the front of the net and secured the win for Penn State by outplaying Michigan State's goalkeeper, Lyra Gavino. This capped off an aggressive period for Penn State, who had several attempts at scoring during overtime.

Penn State attempted 35 shots throughout the game, including seven in overtime. Gavino was pivotal for Michigan State, making six saves in both the third quarter and overtime, totaling a career-best of 17 saves.

"Sophia Gladieux had PSU's best first chance 90 seconds into the first extra period," noted an observer. Despite multiple opportunities from Gladieux and others, Gavino managed to keep many shots from finding their mark.

Gladieux led Penn State with 11 shots on goal out of their total attempts. Julienne van Bekkum and Jennes scored for Penn State while Lauren Delgado made four saves as their goalkeeper.

Carmen Pucheta scored early for Michigan State, marking her third goal this season after recovering her own rebound following a save by Delgado.

The Nittany Lions initially thought they had equalized less than 20 minutes into play; however, it was overturned upon review. They were awarded a penalty corner instead but failed to score due to Michigan's strong defense.

In the third quarter, Gavino stood out by saving six shots amidst eight penalty corners from Penn State. Eventually, they managed to tie with a goal from van Bekkum after capitalizing on one of their numerous corner attempts.
