Michigan State University faced a 2-0 defeat against Rutgers in a Big Ten match on Friday afternoon. The loss leaves MSU with a record of 7-7 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten, while Rutgers improved to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The first goal came early in the game at the 9:37 mark when Ava Cickavage maneuvered outside the circle, moving right into the shooting area. Her shot was tipped home by Sophie Kuiper for her second goal of the season. Both teams' goalkeepers were active throughout, maintaining a close contest with Rutgers leading in attempts, holding a 5-3 advantage, and each team making two saves by halftime.
In the second half, Rutgers maintained strong defensive play, restricting MSU to just one shot over the final 30 minutes. The Scarlet Knights extended their lead with just over eight minutes left in regulation when Paulina Nicklaus scored from a penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the season.
Lyra Gavino recorded five saves for Michigan State, while Sophia Howard made two stops for Rutgers. Freshman Lilian Knorr was responsible for three out of MSU's four shots during the game. In addition to its victory, Rutgers held an edge with a slim 2-1 lead in penalty corners and outshot MSU 10-4.
Michigan State will continue its road trip on Sunday as they travel to Penn State to complete their three-game series away from home.
