The 1996-97 Michigan State hockey team, led by Head Coach Ron Mason, finished the season with an overall record of 23 wins, 13 losses, and 4 ties. Within the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), they secured a third-place finish with a conference record of 16-7-4.

Key players on the roster included Mike Brusseau, Mike Watt, Tony Tuzzolino, Brian Crane, Steve Ferranti, Jon Gaskins, Tyler Harlton, and Chad Alban. The coaching staff was composed of Assistant Coaches Tom Newton and Willie Mitchell. Dan Singleton served as Video Coordinator and Tom Magee was the Equipment Manager.

Throughout their season, the Spartans faced a variety of opponents. They achieved notable victories against Western Ontario (7-2), Bowling Green (8-2), and Michigan (5-4). However, they also experienced some defeats such as those against Boston College (3-4) and Alaska Fairbanks (2-5).

Their journey in the NCAA tournament concluded at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids after losing to Minnesota with a score of 3-6. This season's efforts showcased strong performances but also highlighted areas for improvement moving forward.
