The 1986-87 Michigan State Hockey Team had a notable season, achieving significant milestones and showcasing their skills on the ice. Under the leadership of Head Coach Ron Mason, the team finished second in the NCAA Tournament and emerged as champions in the CCHA Playoffs. The team's overall record stood at 33 wins, 10 losses, and 2 ties, with a conference record of 23-8-1.

Throughout the season, Michigan State faced numerous opponents, securing victories against teams like Ohio State, Ferris State, Miami, Western Michigan, and Michigan Tech. Despite some setbacks against Illinois-Chicago and Lake Superior State, they demonstrated resilience by bouncing back with key wins.

Noteworthy games included an overtime victory over Bowling Green on November 28th and a dominant performance against Maine in March during the NCAA Regionals held in East Lansing. However, their journey concluded with a loss to North Dakota at the NCAA Frozen Four.

The roster featured players such as Norm Foster, Mitch Messier, Mike Donnelly, Don McSween, and Joe Murphy among others. The coaching staff comprised Assistant Coaches George Gwozdecky and Terry Christensen alongside Team Physician Dr. John Downs.

Overall, the season was marked by strong performances that solidified Michigan State's reputation in college hockey.
