The 1998-99 Michigan State University (MSU) hockey team achieved significant success during their season, capturing multiple titles and earning a place in the NCAA Tournament Frozen Four. Under the leadership of Head Coach Ron Mason, the team ended the season with an impressive overall record of 29 wins, 6 losses, and 7 ties. In conference play within the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), they recorded 20 wins, 3 losses, and 7 ties.
The Spartans claimed several accolades throughout the season. They were crowned CCHA Regular-season Champions and Ice Breaker Champions. Their journey in the NCAA Tournament culminated in reaching the Frozen Four.
The roster included notable players such as Mike York, Shawn Horcoff, and Bryan Adams. The coaching staff featured Assistant Coaches Tom Newton and David McAuliffe alongside Volunteer Assistant Coach Willie Mitchell.
Throughout their schedule, MSU faced various opponents including Western Ontario, Massachusetts, Bowling Green, Ohio State, Northern Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska-Omaha, Alaska Fairbanks, Notre Dame among others. Noteworthy games included victories over Ohio State on November 6th with a score of 3-1 and against Michigan on February 20th with a score of 3-1.
Their performance in tournaments was highlighted by participation in events like the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena and The Crown tournament in Cincinnati. The team's postseason concluded with a victory over Colorado College but ended with a loss to New Hampshire in Anaheim during the NCAA Frozen Four.
