Spartan volleyball concluded their home-opening weekend with a victory over Loyola Chicago, securing the championship at the 2024 Kathy DeBoer Invitational. The match ended with a 3-1 scoreline (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23) at the Breslin Student Events Center.

Michigan State head coach Leah Johnson expressed satisfaction with the team's performance: "Any time you can start with wins on your home court that's going to bode well for the season." She emphasized the importance of protecting their home advantage and praised her team for adapting to changes during the tournament.

The Spartans now hold a 4-2 record as they prepare for Western Michigan, who recently defeated No. 24-ranked Marquette. Junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson was named Tournament MVP, while senior libero Nalani Iosia and junior outside hitter Taylor Preston earned All-Tournament Team honors.

Anderson contributed significantly with 39 kills over the weekend and led Michigan State in various categories. Her performance included a notable match against Western Kentucky. Iosia excelled defensively, averaging over five digs per set across three matches. Preston's contributions were crucial, including a career-high service run against Marist.

In Sunday's game against Loyola Chicago, Anderson achieved a season-high of 17 kills. Coach Johnson highlighted junior middle blocker Nil Okur's impact: "I thought Nil Okur came in and was a huge spark for us in the third."

Senior setter Rachel Muisenga played an all-around role with multiple assists and aces throughout the match.

Michigan State started strong in set one but faced challenges in set two from Loyola Chicago. The Spartans regained control after intermission and maintained composure through late stages of both sets three and four to secure victory.

The team looks forward to continuing their successful streak as they prepare for upcoming matches.
