Michigan State University golfer Shannon Kennedy emerged victorious in the 109th Michigan Women's Amateur Championship. The event, organized by the Golf Association of Michigan, took place at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield.
Kennedy, a rising senior who has competed in the last two NCAA Championships for the Spartans, won five consecutive matches over three days to secure her victory. Reflecting on her win, Kennedy stated, "There were definitely a lot of emotions coming off 18," and added that she managed to maintain control despite feeling nervous throughout the day.
With this state title under her belt, Kennedy automatically qualifies for the U.S. Amateur scheduled from August 5-11 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa. Her journey to victory included tying for 10th place after two rounds of stroke play and advancing through several match play rounds.
In the final match against Elise Fennell, Kennedy came back from an early deficit to win both the 17th and 18th holes and claim the championship. Celebrating with her father, who served as her caddie, Kennedy expressed excitement about competing at a national level: "I can't wait to represent Michigan State and the state of Michigan in the U.S. Am."
