The 2008-09 Michigan State hockey team, led by Head Coach Rick Comley, experienced a challenging season with an overall record of 10 wins, 23 losses, and 5 ties. In the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), they finished tenth with a conference record of 7-14-4.

The team's roster included notable players such as Drew Palmisano, Jeff Lerg, and Jeff Petry. The coaching staff comprised Head Coach Rick Comley and Assistant Coach Tom Newton among others.

Throughout the season, Michigan State faced various opponents in both regular games and tournaments. They began their season with a victory against Western Ontario in an exhibition match on October 6th, winning 4-3. Their performance was mixed throughout the season with significant wins including a victory over Northern Michigan on October 25th and a win against Alaska Fairbanks on January 2nd.

Despite some successes, the team struggled against several top-ranked teams like Boston University and Notre Dame. They also participated in notable tournaments such as the Icebreaker Tournament at Agganis Arena in Boston and the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena.

As the season progressed into March, Michigan State competed in the CCHA Tournament but concluded their run with back-to-back losses to Northern Michigan.
