The 2001-02 Michigan State University (MSU) hockey team, led by Head Coach Ron Mason, completed a successful season with an overall record of 27 wins, 9 losses, and 5 ties. In the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), they secured a second-place finish with an 18-6-4 record.

The team's roster included notable players such as Ryan Miller, Adam Hall, and John-Michael Liles. Assistant coaches Tom Newton and David McAuliffe supported Mason throughout the season. The team's performance in the NCAA Tournament showcased their skills but ended with a loss to Colorado College.

Key victories during the season included wins against Michigan Tech at the Great Lakes Invitational and Northern Michigan in the CCHA Tournament. The team also achieved significant wins over Miami and Ohio State during their conference games.

Despite some challenging matches, including losses to Nebraska-Omaha and a tie against top-ranked Minnesota, the Spartans demonstrated resilience throughout their campaign. Their efforts were bolstered by strong performances from players like Jim Slater and Duncan Keith.

The season concluded with participation in the NCAA West Regional at Yost Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they faced Colorado College but were defeated 0-2.
