The 1997-98 Michigan State University hockey team achieved notable success during their season, securing several titles and reaching the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. Under the leadership of Head Coach Ron Mason, the team finished with an impressive overall record of 33 wins, 6 losses, and 5 ties. In the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), they recorded a first-place finish with a conference record of 21-5-4.

Throughout the season, Michigan State demonstrated strong performances against various opponents. Highlights include victories over Boston University and Wisconsin at the Ice Breaker Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin. They also secured wins against key rivals such as Michigan and Ohio State during regular-season play.

Coach Ron Mason led a roster featuring Captain Tyler Harlton and standout players like Mike York and Sean Berens. The team's support staff included Assistant Coaches Tom Newton, Dave McAuliffe, and Willie Mitchell, along with Trainer Dave Carrier and Team Physician Dr. John Downs.

The Spartans' achievements included winning both the CCHA Regular-season and Tournament Championships. Their journey in the NCAA Tournament ended in the quarterfinals after a close overtime loss to Ohio State in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
