The 1988-89 Michigan State Hockey Team had a remarkable season, achieving significant success in both the NCAA Tournament and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Under the leadership of Head Coach Ron Mason, the team ended their season with an impressive overall record of 37 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie. In CCHA play, they finished first with a record of 25-6-1.
Throughout the season, Michigan State faced various opponents and delivered strong performances. They secured victories against teams such as Ferris State, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Boston University, Ohio State, Miami, and Michigan. Notably, they were crowned champions in both the CCHA Regular Season and Playoffs.
The roster featured players like Jamie Stewart, Brad Hamilton, Danton Cole among others in the front row. The middle row included Kip Miller and Walt Bartels while Doug Collins and Jason Woolley were part of the back row. The coaching staff was led by Ron Mason with assistant coaches Newell Brown and Terry Christensen providing support.
Their journey through tournaments saw them competing at venues like Joe Louis Arena for the Great Lakes Invitational and CCHA Tournament games. They advanced to face Boston College in East Lansing during the NCAA Quarterfinals before reaching the NCAA Frozen Four held in St. Paul.
Michigan State's hockey team demonstrated resilience throughout their schedule which included notable matches against Lake Superior State where they experienced both victory and defeat.
