The 1982-83 Michigan State hockey team, under the guidance of Head Coach Ron Mason, had a remarkable season with an overall record of 30-11-1 and a CCHA record of 23-9-0. The team's performance placed them in a tie for second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

Throughout the season, Michigan State achieved significant victories against various teams. They started strong with wins over Notre Dame in an exhibition match and consecutive victories against McMaster and Illinois-Chicago. Their winning streak continued with triumphs over Ohio State and Michigan.

However, the team faced challenges as well, suffering losses to Northern Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ferris State among others. Despite these setbacks, they maintained their competitive edge with important wins against Miami, Lake Superior State, Western Michigan, and others.

The team's efforts led them to participate in prestigious tournaments such as the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena and the CCHA Tournament. They also competed in the NCAA Regional held in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The roster was comprised of talented players including Tom Nowland, Todd Gardiner, Newell Brown, Nigel Thomas, Mark Hamway, Ken Leiter, Rob Martin, Ron Scott among others. The coaching staff included Assistant Coaches Shawn Walsh and Terry Christensen.

Despite a loss to Harvard during the NCAA Regional tournament with scores of 5-6 and a tie at 3-3 on subsequent days in March 1983, the team demonstrated resilience throughout their season's journey.
